It’s no surprise that a soccer player spends their fair share of time on the ground during an intense game. The constant contact can sometimes leave scuff marks on your shoes, which you should try to remove quickly and with proper care.
How To Remove Turf Stains From Cleats
Though a challenging task, it is possible to remove turf stains from cleats through a variety of ways:
- Liquid detergent
- Baking soda + water mixture (for tough stains)
- Nail polish remover (if all else fails)
Using Liquid Detergent
Here are the steps to remove turf stains from cleats using liquid detergent:
1. Remove the laces from your soccer shoes. If you can, remove the insole from the shoe. This will give you better access to the area that needs to be cleaned.
2. Use a damp rag or sponge to wipe off any dirt or debris on your shoes. Make sure that the rag/sponge is damp but not dripping wet!
3. Pour a small amount of liquid detergent onto the rag/sponge and start scrubbing at the stain on your shoe. The detergent should help loosen up any stains from your shoes and make them easier to wipe away with a damp rag/sponge.
4. Rinse out your rag/sponge with water and continue scrubbing until all of the stains are gone!
Repeat this step as many times as necessary until all of the turf stains are removed from your soccer shoe! If you still have some stains left after scrubbing, move on to Step 5!
5. Use a cleaning brush (or toothbrush) to scrub at any remaining turf stains on your shoes. The bristles of this brush should help get rid of any stubborn stains that remain on your shoes after using soap and water in Step 4 above.
6. After all of the stains are removed from your shoes, use a dry rag/sponge to wipe off any excess water and soap from your shoes.
Make sure that you do not leave any water on your shoes. This will make your shoes wet and they will start to smell.
It is important to let them air dry completely before putting them back on!
Using Baking Soda Mix (For Tough Stains)
Here are the steps to remove turf stains from cleats using a baking soda mix:
1. Remove as much of the rubber turf as possible
2. Use a scrub brush to remove the remaining rubber turf from the shoe, while being careful not to scratch or damage the shoe. A toothbrush works great for this step.
3. Mix 1/4 cup baking soda with 1 quart warm water and pour into a bucket large enough to submerge your shoes in it (you may need more than one bucket).
Soak your shoes for 30 minutes in the solution and then use an old toothbrush or sponge to scrub off any remaining rubber turf from your shoes. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow them to air dry.
4. Once your shoes are dry, use a clean sponge or towel to rub in some leather conditioner.
We recommend using Lexol leather conditioner because it is made specifically for shoe leather and will help keep your shoes looking great.
5. If you have rubber turf stuck to the bottom of your shoes, you can use an old toothbrush to scrub it off.
Just be careful not to scratch the bottom of your shoe while doing so.
Using Nail Polish Remover (If All Else Fails)
Nail polish remover can be the answer to your prayers if all else fails, but make sure to test it on a small area of the boot first.
1. Apply nail polish remover to a white cloth and rub it in. Repeat until the stain is gone. If you don’t have a white cloth, use a paper towel. This step will remove any excess dirt or debris that is stuck in the rubber of your shoes.
2. Dampen a clean cloth with water and wipe down the area of your shoe where the stain was. Be sure to get all of the nail polish remover off of your shoe so that you don’t leave marks on it when you’re done cleaning it.
3. Spray some water onto a clean rag and wipe down your shoe to get rid of any leftover nail polish remover residue or marks left by the rag from Step 2.
